Matilda and her pony By Janelle!

There was a little girl called Matilda. She has a pony and her name is Fluffy! But one day a ghost tried  to steal Fluffy! Matilda wanted to scare the ghost way! So Matilda sneaked up on the ghost and sprays him with a magic spray that makes the ghost disappear! Matilda and her pony were very happy. Matilda and her pony went for a ride in the forest and lived happily ever after.

My Weekend by Shikain

On Saturday, I went to Inglewood to play my soccer game.  We played Inglewood School.  We got a new player on our team, his name is Ethan and he is really good!

The game started, we had the kick off straight away.  We scored a goal.  Then it was half time and my fingers were frozen solid.  Mine were so numb I couldn't feel them.  The game started again.  We were winning 11 to 6 and the game finished.  I was so cold that I screamed for my jacket!

It was time to celebrate for the teams, "HOORAY"!!!  We shook hands and announced the player of the day.  There were two; Phoenix and ME!!!!

Tramp Scooter

In the weekend I made a Tramp Scooter.  A Tramp Scooter is a scooter you can use on a tramp!

How to make a Tramp Scooter:

1. Get  the Scooter Frame and Tramp.

2. Get the back wheel off the Scooter.

3. Put the frame onto the scooter and tap it onto the deck.  Do this 3 times on the back of the frame, 2 times on the front and once in the middle.

4.  Go on the tramp with the scooter.

It's cool and fun to do.  I love it.  Try it.

My Scooter Raps

I have lots of scooter ramps at my home.  I have a quarter pipe, a drop-in rap, a tumble-top , and a ramps for two jumping off.  There are small and large raps. At home, we  make raps all the time. Some other children come to my house to help make Raps.  They are called Dillon  Mason.  They love the raps too. Dillon 6 and Mason is 6.

My experience at Puke Ariki

We walked up the long path to the School bus that would take us to Puke Ariki. We talked about Parihaka. The chief of Parihaka, Te Whiti lived with his Brother, Tohu. We acted the story of Parihaka. All of room11 dressed up. I was a Plougher with Jake. We both ploughed the land of Parihaka. We had morning tea. We went downstairs and we made a model Pa. We made trees, houses, fences, seas, rivers and tunnels. We looked at everybody’s Pa and then we went home. I enjoyed it very much.

Puke Ariki Descriptive Writing

Mindless

When I first walked into Puke Ariki, I heard a busy hum and smelt the mouth watering food in the Cafe, but when I stepped into the undeniably warm room that held priceless Maori artifacts in cold glass display cases. I was surprised with the strange, lingering silence. Soon after I was captured by the feeling that I had stepped back into the past. Even the touch of the hard stone anchor was not enough to wake me from my timeless trance. So I walked, calm and unnoticed, enjoying the feeling of the soft carpet beneath my feet. My soft breathing a constant lullaby. I was forever trapped in this peaceful world, lost, mindless.

Vocaroo Voice Message

My experience at Parihaka!

!!!!!PARIHAKA EXPERIENCE !!!!!!

I had only been awake for about 1-10 minutes when we were packed in the car ready for swimming lessons.  Mum had packed all our things we needed to go to Parihaka. Mum got me out of swimming lessons 5 minutes early so we would not be late for the Powhiri. When we got there we put on our gumboots and went to the crowd of people waiting for sign to go into the Marae.  The women/girls were in a group altogether and the men/boys surrounded them. Then there was two women that did a welcoming song to everyone. When the song finished they lined up in a line ready to the Hongi with the men. Once the men had finished the first lot of women went in they did a Hongi and then lined up next to the peron they had just done the Hongi with. Just before I had to go up mum said to go slowly so you don't bang heads and say Tēnā koe. I went up to the first person very confidently and did my VERY FIRST Hongi!!! we went all the way round the Marae doing Hongi's then stopped and finished and waited for the command E noho. We sat down on the ground and then some men started the Powhiri. It took two whole hours because they kept arguing wether it should have some in english or not. In the end it ended up all Maori. There were some waitas in between. Afterwards there was a MAGNIFICENT kai. None of the food was processed mum called 'Food from the land'. After the kai we went back into the car and went home. That was my Paihaka experience.

Room 11’s BIG question…

How can we promote and protect our unique culture??
Some of my ideas…
J Every day two of three people could get to school early and greet people (in Maori language) as they come through the door.
J We could have a sign on the front gate saying Haere Mai to Frankley School.
J When visitors come to our school we could greet them using N.Z’s three different languages (English, Te Reo and sign language).
J Each class could do some Maori artwork and display it on their classroom walls.
J We could find out what the Maori word is for lunch and or morning tea.
J Frankley School could also be able to find out what the Maori words are for reading, writing and maths.
J We could put Maori words into our everyday writing (words that we all know).
J Each class could get a couple of Maori dictionaries for their classroom.
J Our class could split up into groups of 5-7 and visit other schools in N.P and look around, at their school to see if they have displayed any cultural work in their class; if they have done work that we haven’t rom 11 might be able to do something similar.

Room11s BIG question...

We have been thinking about this question: How can we protect and promote our unique culture in   our class room? This is room11s BIG question.

We talked about it in class altogether and went back to our desks and wrote down our ideas. Here are my ideas:

Classroom treaty: I think the rules on the treaty should have some Maori protocols / customs / rules and also some made up by the rm 11 students. E.G. Maori protocal Cutting flax on a diagonal.

Sign language: I think we should  learn sign language  because it is one of our languages. If we sign language and a visitor came to our classroom, they would understand what we are saying if they spoke a different language. To learn sign language we could go on websites, have a visitor to teach us and have sign language alphabet displayed on the wall. As we are learning sign language we could record us doing it and put the videos on the blog, so people could learn with us.

Maori greetings-Hongi-Powhiri: I think we should learn these two greetings Hongi and Powhiri and other Maori greetings so we can greet people in Maori. To learn we could go onto websites and read books to learn.

Visit different schools in groups of about 5-7 that are learning about 'Our Place': I think we should defintely go to different schools and see what they are doing and us some of their ideas.

Learning about Maori language: I think each class could get a few Maori dictionaries.

Write great things about MUMS

How can we protect and promote our culture

Thursday 9th may

How can we protect and promote our unique Maori culture in our classroom?  Look at some of the ideas we brain dumped.

Sign language

v We could go onto a website that is to do with sign language.

v Learn sign language form an expert.

Classroom treaty

v We could take a tick off the persons table if they sit on a table, touch the top of somebody’s head or talk over top of somebody when they’re talking.

v Don’t bully or gang up on kids.

v Help kids if hurt on playground or anywhere.

Greetings – Hongi

v Maybe if someone special comes to our school like a guest we could do a Hongi or a greeting maybe we could do both.

v Have a first session of greetings in the morning at school like a class.

how can we protect and promote our unique culture in our classroom

9  MAY 2013

How can we protect and promote our unique culture in our classroom ???????

We are learning about Our Place and we are looking at ways to protect and promote out culture in room 11.  We brainstormed lots of ideas.  We talked about what culture is.  I think these are some good ideas.

1   Classroom treaty

On our classroom treaty we could write down rules on how we can work together in room 11. This is what the Waitaingi Treaty did.  We would all have to sign the treaty if we agree with the rules. We could put up a display about it on the wall.

2  Sign language

Learn about it and give greetings to people for a week or so. Go onto a website and learn the abc’s  start with basics.

3   Greetings- Hongi- powhiri

Learn more about the hongi and once we have learnt the meaning of it go to a marae to try it out.

4 What other schools are doing

We could visit other schools and have little one on one conferences, when we are done gather information and share with class.
