Cause of Cholera disease discovered

The disease Cholera has been affecting London killing hundreds of people for at least a fortnight. Now Doctor John Snow, a pioneer of disease and father of epidemiology, has his theory of how the city's water has caused of all this sickness and death.
"I have been working day and night to find the cause of this disease," Doctor Snow explains. "I have the locations of the victims' homes and discovered that the closest pump to nearly all of them is the Broad Street pump. The victim's families also explained to me that they used that water pump in particular."
Reverend Henry Whitehead has also been investigating this case and is willing to share his story.

"At first I thought the epidemic was caused by divine intervention," Whitehead explains, "but that was before I heard about the baby with diarrhoea. I went to investigate and discovered that the baby lived on 40 Broad Street. The cesspool at the front of the house was 3 feet away from the pump. I asked for the ground to be dug up and a crack was found that allowed the contents of the cesspool to enter the well contaminating the water. The whole thing was unnecessary. If London's drainage and sewer systems had been made better this would never have happened."

injury after injury made by Kieran

A minute ago I visited a fella called Paul who works as a physio.
I am going to the physio to fix all of the injured mucles in my legs. Paul says "it is a injury that needs to be dealt with emediately".
What happened to start everything up was my imflamated heels and my the akilies, they lead to the pain in my calf, selevies and knee problems. So with all those problems on both legs I limp, and when I limp I stir up my hamstring and gluetiusmaxsimas.
With that said and done I have got a whole load of exercises and strengthening workouts to get me back feeling 100% in 10 days!! I have to take full care of myself for the rest of the time I have got before a trip to Napier.
I cant wait to start the journey I am about to begin.

“Yes a pig and a sloth” said the scared face investigator.
“Wait so where are…” he paused in an instant.
The door started to creek open and out came two angry animals a sloth and a pig. But there was something strange, they both had a knife. The pig that had sharp teeth dropped the sloth and bit the scared face investigators arm off and he let out a scream louder than the sloths.

Then a wile later an grumpy old man came along. "Nathan walked up and they had a argument "Nathan said we don't want your trouble. Its not hurting anyone please just go away. when we got home our legs were all numb. Then we had a ice cold drink and a big rest in the lounge. Our hands legs and fingers were all worn out and my sister was really tired.

My tramping trip

Saturday   morning I was watching TV at my house and my friend named Joseph called me and asked me if I wanted to go for a tramp up the mountain and I said yes.  I got my gear ready for the trip then Joseph came with his uncle to come get me.
When we got there I couldn't wait to start walking
We were only a little bit in to the mountain and I heard there was boar a.k.a wild boar  was in here I wanted to run out I only had a knife but I kept on walking.
Then we walked up so high we got up to 500 feet and I started getting hard to breath but it was just me overreacting.
It was really dark in the mountain but not to fare ahead I could see light and I ran out of the thick trees and there was a hut I look down the mountain we attest 1200 feet above sea level.
In the hut there was a bench with chars and a big room
With two bunk beds the beds could fit at least
12 people at once. Outside there was a toilet and a solar panel and a great view off the mountain. We walked around for a while then we start to walk back down the mountain. We just got back into the bush I was still a little worried about the boar but my Joseph uncle was striking us So I kept on walking. A Little bit down the mountain Joseph and I started running when we got out  Josephs uncle was a little bit angry with us but he was fine
and we finally went  home.

Mr Frisby's Death - Gregor

Mr Frisby’s Death

His heart was racing at 100 Miles Per Hour. He took one big shaky step towards his greatest fear. It was staring him right in the eye, and he was doing the same. With sweat pouring down his face he ran for it like a cheetah chasing their prey. As he saw him take a giant leap, He realized it’s the other way around. But he’s too late. His claws are razor sharp, With fang like teeth. The last thing Mr Frisby saw was his knife like claws. This is the end for Mr Frisby.

war.

Heart pumping in the trench. Bullets smashing to the dirt. Man down dying, slowly. Lost in action. Heart stops. Going to the light. Lives lost. Dodging Nazi trains. Rifling them and men gone. Trying to save the world from Hitler.

Rocky all set to be a star YVETTE BATTEN - NORTH TARANAKI MIDWEEK

  -

Weeding the garden, gate-crashing parties and joining sporting matches is all part of a day's work for Rocky the cat.
The Tongaporutu feline's antics have made him a prime subject of the North Taranaki SPCA's fundraising 2014 calendar.
For a fee, people could submit photos of their pets. All photos appeared in the calendar.
His owners Denise and Richard Burton submitted a photo of the puss taking a ride home up the Tongaporutu River on a paddle board after gate-crashing a party.

"He really has got the most loveable nature," said Denise.
It was love at first sight when the Burtons saw Rocky at the SPCA. Shortly after adoption, in May 2012, Rocky became ill with a sinus infection, which still plagues him to this day.
"We have to keep him on antibiotics," Denise said.
When he did come home the curious puss began to wander.
"He'd go down to the bottom baches [further down the river] and somebody would have to bring him home. We'd get phone calls."
At first Rocky only had the Burtons' phone number on his collar.
"He went visiting the bottom baches and people didn't realise he was in their bach and shut up and went home," said Richard.
"The neighbouring bach saw him in the window. They had a key and somebody grabbed him and took him home to Eltham."
Now Rocky also carries an address tag on his collar too. There's even a notice about him on the fridge in the nearby community's hall.
"So people know where he lives and that he actually belongs around here."
Rocky also regularly visits his neighbours too. Often he'll pop in to see one lady in her 90s for a cuddle and a snooze.
SPCA spokeswoman Jackie Poles Smith said his photo was one of 170 photos featured in their fundraising calendar.
"We're just finding every year this calendar is more and more successful," she said.
"People love it. We love it and basically the [photo] entry fees covered the cost of printing the calendar so all the money from the sales of the calendar look after animals here at the SPCA."
Pets featured this year include cats, dogs, goats, donkeys, lambs, chickens, turkeys and llamas.
Other information includes general details about the SPCA, animal welfare and some stories of the pets featured inside.
More than 700 copies of the calendar, costing $15 each, are available.
Pick one up from the shelter on Colson Rd, the SPCA Op Shop on Liardet St, Mitre 10 Mega, Animates and various vets.

Orientation day at Highlands

Orientation day at Highlands

Today, all the year sixes that are going to Highlands intermediate next year are going to Highlands today it is because it is Orientation day, I can’t wait! I am a little bit nervous.

I’m excited because I get to see the school and classes, and I think Mr Shaw will show us around, and my Mum said that there is going to be an Assembly and they are going to tell us about Highlands, my Mum said to listen, I think they tell the rules and about their school.

I am nervous because it is a Big school and there are big kids, and when it comes to bullying or teasing I don’t really stick up for myself. But there are some small people at Highlands.

What happened after I’ve been:

It was very great! There was nothing to be worried about! Everything was 100% AWESOME, The Kappa Hakka group sang and did the Hakka, they had really good voices. Their voices are all doing different tunes like high pitch and low, it’s like the Choir too. When the principal (Mr Shaw) gave me a sheet about Highlands I said thank you nice and clear and he kept on saying how lovely it was to say thank you, HE is the lovely one. I wasn’t expecting that!

Thanks for reading, By Billie w

the swamp - written by Shikain

The swamp

“Patch hurry, the sun is going down and if it’s down can’t see anything”, I yelled out to Patch. If we were late and can’t make it we will have to build a hut and make a fire. I can go slowly because my gumboots are flooding with mud from that sinking mud.

“It’s about a mile away”, said Patch, “and we forgot our jackets. And when get back to the house we will wash our legs and have dinner.” We all agreed with it.

We had to cross broken trees and we wanted to be on Man vs. wild.  We got out of the bush and onto the farm land. It was a steep hill and Patch’s house was behind a fence. When we got to the house we had to wash our feet big time and then patch’s mum asked if I wanted to stay for fish and chips. I said yes please with my manners.

I want to go back there. It was so much fun.

Nikki- KOALAS stroy

I love Koalas as they have fluffy, silky grey hair. They look so cute, i could cuddle them.

Koalas like to eat eucalyptus leaves, they also sleep most of the day because they are nocturnal.

Koalas are also part of the marsupial family, their are called a "joey". The mother gives birth to the joey . the joey then climbs its way up to the pouch. In the pouch the joey grows.

Ones the joey laves its mothers pouch it starts to eat eucalyptus leaves for the first time in its life. but before this the joey will eat the "Pap" which comes from the mother and helps give the joey the good bacteria for its intestines. So that the joey can eat eucalyptus leaves.

McDonald's - written by Cooper

I'm going to tell you the most yummy story ever. Your mouth will water when you hear this.

My mouth waters as I get closer and closer. I couldn't wait to taste the mouth watering delights. I picked up the slim chip and put it in my mouth, it was so yum. I picked up the burger and I was about to go to food heaven. I was going to eat the nuggets but I took a drink of frozen fanta first. I dipped the nugget into the sweet and sour sauce and bit into the most delicious meat in the world.

I'm just about to fit one more thing in and it is a McFlurry. I had a spoon of the McFlurry and tasted it like a judge. I would give it a 10/10.

Ban aims to end NZ shark fin slaughter - article

Newspaper article
Use this article to discuss the main points and new vocabulary.

A long-awaited proposal to ban shark-finning in New Zealand waters has won the backing of environmentalists.
The Government yesterday released a proposal to outlaw the practice of killing a shark, slicing off their fins and throwing the carcass back to sea. The ban would be phased in over two years, beginning next October.
Finning a live shark is already illegal under animal welfare laws. Fisherman dump the carcass because it takes up valuable storage space on a vessel.
East Asian countries prize fins for the shark fin soup delicacy and traditional medicine, and they can fetch up to $1200 each. New Zealand is among the world's top 20 exporters of fins to China and Singapore, with the trade worth about $5 million a year.
Conservationists have been lobbying the Government for five years for a ban, arguing the country is lagging behind almost 100 others who have made the practice illegal.
Conservation Minister Nick Smith described the practice as "abhorrent".
"Sharks may not be as cuddly as kiwi or as cute as dolphins but they are an important part of New Zealand's marine biodiversity."
He launched the Draft National Plan of Action at Wellington's Island Bay Marine Education centre with Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy.
Mr Guy said there has been a "major" drop - of up to 90 per cent - in the shark fin trade from New Zealand in 2013. The national carrier Air New Zealand and some shipping companies have also recently refused to freight fins.
There are two proposals in the draft plan. A 'shark trunk to fins ratio' policy allows fisherman to process the carcass at sea, but must ensure fins and bodies are landed in proper proportions.
The European Union moved away from this strategy in June, in favour of a 'fins naturally attached' policy - which is also recommended by the United Nations.
Greenpeace favours the fins- attached approach. Senior Oceans Campaigner Karli Thomas said it was "international best practice."
"That effectively means requiring sharks to be landed whole . . . the problem with [trunk to fins ratio] is it is very difficult to enforce, it leaves a number of loopholes open for messing the system."
She said it was "encouraging" the Government was finally taking the issue seriously but wanted the change in place before 2016.Green Party MP Gareth Hughes, a vocal opponent, said he was "delighted" by the plan. He also supports fins naturally attached.
"Continuing shark finning was always a big risk to our international brand," he said.
WWF Marine Advocate Milena Palka said the ban was "a long time coming".
Ad Feedback
She agreed it could be "sped up a little".
Labour's fisheries spokesman Damien O'Connor said "New Zealand has finally caught up with many of the other world's nations in banning shark finning."
Public submissions on the proposals close on December 8.

Kieran's Career in football

At the moment I am enjoying my football so much that I am getting nicknames that have been very encouraging. My total motivation is definitely from the team that I adore so much, Liverpool. They are such a classy team and their midfielder has got a great amount of skills and sportsmanship. Steven Gerrard is the captain of Liverpool. I look up to him not only as a leader but a amazing man and friend. My future and passion for soccer is immense. I couldn't be happier and more excited to see where my career might lead me to in life.
My next steps are to take it easy, don't get injured and take in everything that I am being told from my coaches.

Why I'm writing about Hamish is because I love him. Anyone who likes dogs should read this story. I have done a lot of work.
My dog Hamish is a black lab hunter way cross Hamish is really big and has soft ears.

I can’t remember when we got him but he is three. I know that we have had him since he was 8 months old.

If you run up to him he will jump on you and I learnt that the hard way. Now I’m   prepared for that.  I put my hands up so he stop.

The thing Hamish loves to do is probably to lick people to death.

Hamish also loves to go for far walks and runs. I love Hamish because when he ran away. I just had to call him and he came. We love Hamish….

My trip to Onaero

"Yehaaa!!" I shouted as we raced down the river in our kayaks. Jake and I suddenly ship wrecked our kayaks on a mud island! We made tracks and slides for us to go speeding down them when it was high tide. In the mean time we were exploring and sinking in the squishy mud.
All of the whitebait were coming up stream with the tide and the huge surges was making everything very wavy. That night we went eeling and we kept on getting heaps of nibbles on the bait, the bait was always not there when we retrieved it. At the last minute we caught a 1.5 kg eel and it fought al the way in.
I would love to go there back to their bach one day because I had so much fun.

Patch and Boo Boo.

“Patch!”  i looked around and said “what mum?”
“We are getting boo boo tonight.” so i got Evan and we biked home.  “Evan I am going to tell my teacher.”  I told my teacher, “we are going to get boo boo our kitten tonight.”
Boo boo is a kitten, he is 8 weeks old and his owner died.  Boo boo is very playful and fun.  My mum was mopping the vinyl and he got on the wet floor and was sliding .  Then he went in to the wool.
he had an operation to help him not be so aggressive. Boo boo jumped up on to my mum and dads bed. Boo boo jumped on to barnie and deno’s bed too.  Boo boo jumped on to my bed too.  Boo boo loves my mum dad bed the most.  Boo boo sleeps on your head too.

Popular pools reach 20-year milestone

Todd Energy Aquatic Centre's indoor pool has made a splash in the community for 20 years.
On October 17, 1994, the pool was opened after about a year of vigorous community-based fundraising.
Check out this article! Somehwre that many of you go. Some interesting vocab
facility, input, expanded, implemented, initial, milestone.

What are the main ideas in this article?

Popular pools reach 20-year milestone

Adding indoor pools to the existing 50-year-old outdoor facility was the idea of Barry Marsh and Steve Ander.
"[We were] reading a pool magazine, which showed an aquatic centre in Canada," Mr Marsh said.
"Our thought at the time was that this would be ideal for here."
They set about raising the $1.7 million needed for the build.
"We used the pool a lot for our fundraising; like gala days down here," he said.
Further financial aid included TSB Community Trust and Todd Energy. Mr Marsh also had input into the designs.
"When we got the first lot of plans from the developers we had some problems.
"The lanes were were only 900cm wide. We had them expanded out to two metres, which would allow swimmers to pass."
Among other things the team implemented after seeing the initial plan was windows on the seaward side.
Mr Marsh is thrilled to see so many groups and people using the pool, especially those to learning to swim.
"I hope the council keep the pool charges to a minimum so it's affordable for families and people on limited or fixed incomes."
Centre manager Mike Roberts said about 370,000 people use the pool each year.
The 20 year anniversary was celebrated with a cake cutting. He wanted to thank Barry and all the people involved in the build.
"Without all that fundraising we probably wouldn't have had an indoor pool for many years after. For the community, it's an asset," he said.
In 2009 the centre was changed to accommodate an indoor hydroslide. There may be further changes in the future.
New Plymouth District Council is doing a Community Aquatic Needs Analysis Report, which will be presented to the council in the new year.

Nikki- HOLIDAY!!!!

                                                      October school holiday

Today our family went to the skyline in luge in rotorua. Mikayla, Daddy and I went together on the luge and then to the jelly belly jelly beans shop. Once we had finished shopping at the jelly belly we went to rainbow springs .We went on the big splash which told us stories about the old days in New Zealand. At the end of the boat ride, you go down a large slide at the bottom you get splashed with water. We did the big splash twice, the second time it made me feel sick inside, YUCK!!!!!!! We went through the gift shop, but saw noting we liked. So then we went to the mini putt. Rotoroa’s mini putt course was hard because there were penties for when your, ball landed on the water or land. Finally we went to the 3D maze. I ran to do the maze, thinking that it was easy but, I was wrong it was difficult. Mikayla found the first coloured corners and I found the last three. I was really hot from the burning sun so we get an ice block, YUM!!!!!!Off we went to go to toupo. In toupo we stayed at wairakie resort hotel they had spa pools, fitness centre, tennis court, playground, two swimming pools, squash court and two restarts. We had breakfast every morning they had fruit, cereal, bacon, hash brown, suger, eggs and toast. We went to have dinner at the fairway restaurant the best part of the meal was dessert. On Friday we went to white water world river adventure. At the 4D ride they made us sit in special seats Mikayla and I in the front, Mummy daddy in the back. We got some 3D glasses. Then the ride started to move within a few seconds water started pouring out on us from nozzles. We watch people rafting down two rive one being the tongarino river and the other one being the kaituna river. In the afternoon we had a swim. We got mcds for tea Mikayla and I had a fillet-o-fish and Daddy had one too and a big mac. We ate it at the park side near Lake Taupo. I LIKED OUR HOLIDAY.
