first we went to watch kaylum play rugby.  we went back home for lunch we had soup for lunch. I put my uniform on to get ready for netball and we lost 9-1. And then we went to watch Lachlan play rugby. we went home to get dressed and we went out for tea at the good home. and then we went to the basketball to watch the mountaineers. they lost 93-74. I have hot chips and a drink at the basketball. we sat on a black couch and then we went home!!!

Room 11’s BIG question…

How can we promote and protect our unique culture??

Some of my ideas…

J Every day two of three people could get to school early and greet people (in Maori language) as they come through the door.

J We could have a sign on the front gate saying Haere Mai to Frankley School.

J When visitors come to our school we could greet them using N.Z’s three different languages (English, Te Reo and sign language).

J Each class could do some Maori artwork and display it on their classroom walls.

J We could find out what the Maori word is for lunch and or morning tea.

J Frankley School could also be able to find out what the Maori words are for reading, writing and maths.

J We could put Maori words into our everyday writing (words that we all know).

J Each class could get a couple of Maori dictionaries for their classroom.

J Our class could split up into groups of 5-7 and visit other schools in N.P and look around, at their school to see if they have displayed any cultural work in their class; if they have done work that we haven’t rom 11 might be able to do something similar.

Room11s BIG question...

We have been thinking about this question: How can we protect and promote our unique culture in   our class room? This is room11s BIG question.

 

We talked about it in class altogether and went back to our desks and wrote down our ideas. Here are my ideas:

 

 

Classroom treaty: I think the rules on the treaty should have some Maori protocols / customs / rules and also some made up by the rm 11 students. E.G. Maori protocal Cutting flax on a diagonal.

 

Sign language: I think we should  learn sign language  because it is one of our languages. If we sign language and a visitor came to our classroom, they would understand what we are saying if they spoke a different language. To learn sign language we could go on websites, have a visitor to teach us and have sign language alphabet displayed on the wall. As we are learning sign language we could record us doing it and put the videos on the blog, so people could learn with us.

 

 

Maori greetings-Hongi-Powhiri: I think we should learn these two greetings Hongi and Powhiri and other Maori greetings so we can greet people in Maori. To learn we could go onto websites and read books to learn.

 

Visit different schools in groups of about 5-7 that are learning about 'Our Place': I think we should defintely go to different schools and see what they are doing and us some of their ideas. 

Learning about Maori language: I think each class could get a few Maori dictionaries.

Thursday 9^th may

How can we protect and promote our unique Maori culture in our classroom?  Look at some of the ideas we brain dumped.

 

Sign language

v We could go onto a website that is to do with sign language.

v Learn sign language form an expert.

 

Classroom treaty

v We could take a tick off the persons table if they sit on a table, touch the top of somebody’s head or talk over top of somebody when they’re talking.

v Don’t bully or gang up on kids.

v Help kids if hurt on playground or anywhere.

 

 

Greetings – Hongi

v Maybe if someone special comes to our school like a guest we could do a Hongi or a greeting maybe we could do both.

v Have a first session of greetings in the morning at school like a class.

How can we protect and promote our unique culture in our classroom ???????

We are learning about Our Place and we are looking at ways to protect and promote out culture in room 11.  We brainstormed lots of ideas.  We talked about what culture is.  I think these are some good ideas.

1   Classroom treaty

On our classroom treaty we could write down rules on how we can work together in room 11. This is what the Waitaingi Treaty did.  We would all have to sign the treaty if we agree with the rules. We could put up a display about it on the wall.

 

2  Sign language

Learn about it and give greetings to people for a week or so. Go onto a website and learn the abc’s  start with basics.

 

3   Greetings- Hongi- powhiri

Learn more about the hongi and once we have learnt the meaning of it go to a marae to try it out.

 

4 What other schools are doing

We could visit other schools and have little one on one conferences, when we are done gather information and share with class.
